The Gotland squad has already attained its goal

Gotland’s squad at this year’s NatWest Island Games set up three goals for this year’s games on our home ground, one of which was to make this the best games ever since the first Island Games in 1985 on the Isle of Man. Another goal was to win at least twenty gold medals, and now this has already been achieved.

"This has been an outstanding success for Gotlandic sport, and proof that our extra effort under the slogan ‘More gold for Gotland’ has brought ample reward," says Lars Sjöholm, chairman of the Gotland Sports Federation.

It is obvious that the Gotlandic sportsmen and women taking part in the 14 events have risen to the occasion during these contests on their home ground. The sporting successes contribute to the highly positive atmosphere that permeates the games and the fine organisation.

"It is extra pleasing that we have managed to win medals in events where we have never been successful before, and that we have so many new Island Games medallists, which shows the great breadth of Gotlandic sport", says Patrik Oscarsson, manager of the Gotland troop.

The drive to win "More gold for Gotland" has put the whole Gotlandic squad in excellent spirits, helping to create a sense of solidarity, and leading to beneficial interaction between competitors in different sports. This is proof that the Gotland Sports Federation is on the right track with its efforts to further combined sporting ventures.

"We hope that these successes for Gotlandic sport will be significant for future games and multi-sport events, as well as for the role of the sports movement in developing Gotlandic society as a whole," says Lars Sjöholm, chairman of the Gotland Sports Federation.

Hopefully, these exceptional successes for Gotlandic sport will also have the result that Gotland will have more participants as Gotlandic ambassadors in the next NatWest Island Games on the Isle of Man in 2001.

On behalf of the Gotland Sports Federation
