Exciting General Meeting during the NatWest Island Games

In connection with the Island Games on Gotland, the Island Games Association, IGA, is holding both an extraordinary general meeting and an ordinary general meeting.

At the extraordinary general meeting on Sunday evening, a historical decision will probably be taken, one that Gotland at least has wished for: that doping should be prohibited during the games. It may seem strange, but there has in fact been no provision in the Constitutions of the Island Games to prevent doping. The Executive Committee envisages that this decision will be taken on Sunday evening, so that the rule will apply in the coming doping checks during the games.

Gotland has submitted three motions to the ordinary meeting, including one to charge the Executive Committee with the task of compiling special rules on doping for the Island Games, so that there will be no need to go through the international associations of the individual sports to carry out checks at future games.

As regards the elections to the Executive Committee, there is a chance that a woman may be elected for the first time in the history of the games. She is Jill Gillings from the Isle of Man, who is a candidate for one of the six places on the committee. It will almost certainly be a tough contest, since there are six candidates to the two places on the committee.

There is also a motion from Ynys Môn to change the rules on representation, and a motion from the Cayman Islands that Executive Committee members should not be allowed to vote for themselves in elections to the Executive Committee. This is right and proper in view of the tradition in the Swedish popular movements. Furthermore, the Isle of Man wants to limit the period of service on the Executive Committee to a maximum of four years, which may be a wise decision in order to avoid negative comparisons with the IOC. Gotland has submitted a motion to change the registration time from two months to one month before the start of the games. This is at the request of most of the sports, which find it difficult to select definitive squads as early as two months before the games.
