| Gotland is right in the middle of Baltic sea, 90 km off the Swedish
mainland and som 130 km from Estonia. The island is home to about 58.000 people, of Whom
22.000 live in Visby, the capital. In December 1995, this perfectly preserved Hanseatic
city was entered into UNESO's World Heritage list in recognition of its value for the
generations to come. Gotland itself comprises 3.140 square kilometers of countryside and culture. Here, since time immemorial, wind and water have sculpted the island's dramatic landscapes, while the hand of man has tilled the fields and created a living enviornment that, with its unique architectural heritage, still bears witness to the years gone by. |
